Year-end 2008 lists: Top 10 Hindi albums i have heard this year

After a nice and relaxing weekend in Bangalore i am back. Didnt browse the net for 4 days, and didn’t miss browsing the net. Anyways, back to the year end lists.

The year 2008 may have been a bad one for Hindi films, but the songs were really good this year. Every composer seemed to be at his best and there was a lot of experimentation seen in soundtracks which led to a really good listening experience.

So, here are my top 10 albums for the year with the representative song, the criteria on which i have judged them.

  • The song itself, the composition
  • The re-listening factor
  • The way it is shot
  • How much the song has stayed with me after listening to it
  • The song is also taken as a representation of the whole album

Honorable Mentions: Oye Lucky Lucky Oye,  Alvida(from Dasvidaniya), Tashan Mein, Mar Jaawan (Fashion), Khabar Nahi (Dostana)

10. Haule Haule (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi): A very well shot song, SRK looking completely different than normal and Salim-Sulaiman’s best composition ever. Its a pity the album as a whole rises to just about ok. Else this song would have been higher.

09. Sinngh is Kinng: Rap Version (Sinngh is Kinng): This song stood head and shoulders above the rest of the album, only “Teri Ore” has earned repeat listens from me. Snoop Dogg doesnt have much to do in this song though, a very good song to just chill out to.

08.  Kabhi Kabhi Aditi (JTYJN): A song whose rendition by my cubicle mate and future Indian-idol Mr.SKJ must have been heard by me at least 50-100 times a day. This was a really good album by Rahman, but the lack of one break-out hit hurts it and hence is my number 8.

07. Guzarish (Ghajini): A weak album by Rahman, but the song Guzarish being a breakout hit, along with its brilliant picturization bump this above JTYJN. Apart from Guzarish, the only other song i have given a repeat listen to is “Kaise mujhe tum”.

06. Pehli Nazar Mein (Race): The movie was a convoluted twist-filled entertainer. The music was even better, Pehli Nazar Mein was the standout song. The album is at number 6 because of lack of originality.

05. Bachna Ae Haseeno (Bachna Ae Haseeno): How can an album become a hit by relying almost completely on a 30-year old song as its lynchpin. Bachna Ae Haseeno showed that you can reimagine songs without making them unrecognizable. “Khuda Jaane” “Aahista Aahista” were other good songs on this album. Its at number 5 because of the song “Lucky Boy” which pulls the album from brilliant to just OK territory.

04.  Is this love? (Kismat Konnection): Pritams best album for this year. This would probably have been number 1 any other year, but as per me there are 3 better music albums than this one.

03. Khwaja mere Khwaja (Jodhaa Akbar): Rahmans best for the year. Picturization of this song just stole a march on all other songs this year, the picturization on the 3 singers has to be the best video this year. The rest of the album has “Jashn-e-bahaara” and “Azeem-o-shaan shahenshah” and “In Lamhon ke daaman mein”. The situational soundtrack is why it is at number 3.

02. Pichle saat dinon mein (Rock On!): If this year spawned an anthem, Pichle saat dinon mein was it. Brilliant song, well shot and Farhan Akhtar was brilliant on vocals.

And the Number 1, the best music album this year as per me.

01. Judaai (Jannat): This was a brilliant album. The Bhatts score again. Zara si, the tilte track, Judaai, Haan Tu Hain, all worth a second listen.

That was it, my top 10 albums. Lets hope 2009 is as good for music as 2008 was.

Until Next Time,

  1. maaaaaaamu… Why isn’t there the title song of Rock On ???????

    • Well, i limited the list to one song per album. Pichle saat dinon mein took the spot for Rock On

  2. i got that, my question was why not rock on istead of pichle saat dino! 😛
