Filmfare Awards: The nominations and my picks.

Hi All,

As i have done for 2 consecutive years,(its actually been that long since i started blogging?) i decided to post the critique of this years nominations and give my picks again.

The past 2 weeks for me have been very very hectic, i have been staying in office till obscenely late, that is why there was quiet on the blog front.

Anyways, on to the nominations

Best Film

A look at the nominations above leads us to the first question. Where is “A Wednesday”? By far one of the best movies made this year, it deserved to be recognized here. Instead, RNBDJ sneaks the obligatory YRF nom, although it has absolutely no chance of winning. Jodhaa Akbar will most likely take the trophy home, it has what Hindi films are known for, a full-on spectacle. Rock On!! is my personal favorite in the bunch, as made evident by my year end movie rankings

Will win: Jodhaa Akbar

Should Win: Rock On!

Best Director
A.R. Murugadoss – Gajini
Abhishek Kapoor – Rock On!!
Aditya Chopra – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Anees Bazmee – Singh Is Kinng
Ashutosh Gowariker – Jodhaa Akbar
Madhur Bhandarkar – Fashion
Neeraj Pandey – A Wednesday

The sore thumb in this group is surprisingly NOT Aditya Chopra (who did a very good direction job on RNBDJ) but it is Anees Bazmee. Lets face it, Sinngh is kinng is not awards bait. If i had to choose, i would give it to Neeraj Pandey, but i feel that Filmfare will probably hand it to Ashutosh Gowariker.

Will win: Ashutosh Gowariker

Should win: Neeraj Pandey

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Aamir Khan – Ghajini
Akshay Kumar – Singh Is Kinng
Amitabh Bachchan – The Last Lear
Hrithik Roshan – Jodhaa Akbar
Shah Rukh Khan – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

If we were to award this based on just half the movie, SRK would easily take this for his amazing turn as Surinder Sahni (Punjab power, lighting up your life), but SRK’s chances are ruined because he was also Raj in the same movie. It comes down to Aamir Khan’s intense performance in Ghajini versus Hrithik in Jodhaa Akbar. The only question is whether Filmfare will want to award someone who wont show up for the show. I will still go with Aamir Khan as i felt that he carried the movie on his shoulders. As an aside, i think Amitabh Bachchan has been nominated here just so that he can be given the critics best actor award.

Should and will win: Aamir Khan

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Aishwarya Rai – Jodhaa Akbar
Anushka Sharma – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Asin Thottumkal – Ghajini
Kajol – U Me aur Hum
Priyanka Chopra – Fashion

No competition here. Priyanka Chopra in Fashion, i mean, she was basically playing herself. How can she go wrong?

Will, should and a 100% lock to win: Priyanka Chopra

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Abhishek Bachchan – Sarkar Raj
Arjun Rampal – Rock On!!
Prateik Babbar – Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na
Sonu Sood – Jodhaa Akbar
Tusshar Kapoor – Golmaal Returns
Vinay Pathak – Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

I am impressed with Filmfare, they dropped the Best Villain and Best Comedian awards and treated all character actors equally, kudos.

Coming to this award, Tusshar Kapoor and Arjun Rampal are the frontrunners (i never ever in my wildest dreams thought i would say that about an acting award, congratulations to both actors for proving me wrong). But Arjun Rampals amazing performance in Rock On!! will win it for him.

Should and will win: Arjun Rampal

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Bipasha Basu – Bachna Ae Haseeno
Kangna Ranaut – Fashion
Kirron Kher – Dostana
Ratna Pathak Shah – Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na
Shahana Goswami – Rock On!!

Again, it comes down to 2. Kangna Ranaut and Shahana Goswami. I feel that Kangna Ranaut has become typecast in the flying-off-the-edge roles. That is one reason why Shahana Goswami will win here, the other reason being that her performance was really, really good.

Should and will win: Shahana Goswami

Best Music
A R Rahman – Ghajini
A R Rahman – Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na
A R Rahman – Jodhaa Akbar
Pritam Chakroborty – Race
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy – Rock on!!
Vishal-Shekhar – Dostana

Fact: A.R.Rahman has never lost when he has been nominated (including last years undeserved award for Guru). This year, based on pure music alone, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy deserve to win for pushing the musical envelope in Rock On!!, but Filmfare being filmfare and the “Oscar Effect” will gain Rahman the award for JTYJN, his freshest score in ages

Should win: SEL (Rock On!!)

Will win: A.R.Rahman (JTYJN)

Best Lyrics
Abbas Tyrewala – Kabhi Kabhi Aditi, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane
Gulzar – Tu Meri Dost Hai, Yuvvraaj
Jaideep Sahni – Haule Haule, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Javed Akhtar – Jashn-E-Bahara, Jodhaa Akbar
Javed Akhtar – Socha Hai, Rock On!!
Prasoon Joshi – Guzarish, Ghajini

This is a toss-up, ideally i would like to see Prasoon Joshi take this, but the above mentioned “Oscar Effect” might see Gulzar take it, the only thing standing in Gulzars way is that he is nominated for Yuvvraaj, which next to no one saw. So, it is now between Guzarish and Jashn-e-bahaara. I still think Prasoon Joshi will take this. But this might be the surprise category of the night.

Should and will win: Prasoon Joshi (Guzarish)

Best Playback Singer (Male)
Farhan Akhtar – Socha Hai, Rock On!!
KK – Khuda Jaane, Bachna Ae Haseeno
KK – Zara Si Dil Mein, Jannat
Rashid Ali – Kabhi Kabhi Aditi, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na
Sonu Niigaam – Inn Lamhon Ke, Jodhaa Akbar
Sukhwinder Singh – Haule Haule, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

No stand-out like Shaan last year, but thats mainly because there is no stand out song. Of the nominated, i would like to see Rashid Ali take it, his voice suited the song to a T, but i think KK might sneak a surprise winning for Khuda Jaane.

Should win: Rashid Ali

Will win: KK (Khuda Jaane)

Best Playback Singer (Female)
Alka Yagnik – Tu Muskura, Yuvvraaj
Neha Bhasin – Kuch Khaas Hai, Fashion
Shilpa Rao – Khuda Jaane, Bachna Ae Haseeno
Shreya Ghoshal – Teri Ore, Singh Is Kinng
Shruti Pathak – Mar Jaawan, Fashion
Sunidhi Chauhan – Dance Pe Chance, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

I dont actually know who deserves this one, the best female vocal song is Khuda Jaane, but Shreya Ghosal is a filmfare favorite.

Should win: Shilpa Rao

Will win: Shreya Ghosal

Those are my picks, what do you think?

Until next time,

  1. Surprising that ‘A Wednesday’ wasn’t included…

Filmfare awards are like WWE matches…they recognise popularity and not merit.

I agree that the Oscar effect will sway a few awards in predicted directions, but somehow wish that Rock On can win.

  2. Lets see how you fared this year:

Will Wins: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music, Best Playback singer female. That’s 6 predictions out of 10 correct.

Should win: Rock on deserved it, but it got the Best story, No mentions of Wednesday anywhere, All Best actor nominations were junk: why wasn’t Naseeruddin Shah nominated?, Thanks to the Award kangana Ranaut will keep playing the same over the edge roles: Shahana won best actress critics, Sukhwinder I felt was a Yash Raj inside job aka jugaad award.

I can only say, I am disappointed by this years awards.

  3. Happy B’day Dude!
