Truth In Advertising – The new Rediff.com ad

This post idea is by Subodh Kapoor, the one man entertainment machine.

I am sure most of us have seen the new rediff.com ad, with the guy in a bathtub when his rubber ducky starts singing a catchy tune. For those who haven’t, here it is:

Till today afternoon, i wasn’t sure what the ad was trying to say till a co-worker decoded it for me. According to him, the ad says that “Rediff.com is full of dumbasses who won’t shut up

So, i asked him to explain. And here is what i got, the ad shows a toy which could previously not speak i.e. a “dumb duck  which now refuses to shut up” even when dipped in water.

A duck in Hindi is called a “Batak” so, we reach a “Dumb Batak which cannot shut up”.

Batak is a homophone for Buttock, which in turn means Ass. Ergo, a “Dumb ass which now can’t shut up”

So, in a marvelous bit of truthful advertising, Rediff.com have basically admitted everything there is to know about their site’s message boards. And if you don’t agree with the message the ad is giving, please, go ahead, read the comments on Rediff.com. It is fun to see how everything devolves into a race war (despite only Indians being on the boards)

So, hats off to you Subodh for decoding this great piece of advertising and the hidden message in it.

Until Next Time,

K.C.G

P.S: Does anyone know the name of the song which is playing in the video. Thanks.
