Filmfare Awards 2010: My predictions

Hello and Welcome once again,

Yes, this blog is still active. In the past month, i have just been too swamped with work. But i am back now, and ready to go.

As has become a tradition with me, i am once again trying to predict the Filmfare awards. This is the 4th year in a row, and i have a fair degree of accuracy with my predictions.

Predicting the Filmfare awards is not like predicting the Oscars. A few factors make it completely different, namely:

  • The best movies almost never win, instead the movies with the biggest stars in them win.
  • The best performances are ALWAYS overlooked and not even nominated.
  • Nepotism rules!
  • TRPs rule!
  • Every movie and every star has to go home happy.

So, with those riders in mind, let us begin: (Nomination list courtesy: )

Best Film

3 Idiots
Dev D
Love Aaj Kal
Wake Up Sid

A good and diverse list of films, although “Love aaj kal” has absolutely no business being up there. Despite Kaminey being the better movie technically, i feel that this is a 2 horse race between 3 Idiots and Paa. But in the end, nothing succeeds like success and 3 Idiots has made history by becoming India’s highest grosser, and if you have read my year-end list, you know that i rate it pretty highly too. So, my take on this is –

Should win: 3 Idiots

Will win: 3 Idiots

Best Director

Anurag Kashyap – Dev D
Ayan Mukerji – Wake Up Sid
Imtiaz Ali – Love Aaj Kal
R Balakrishnan – Paa
Rajkumar Hirani – 3 Idiots
Vishal Bharadwaj – Kaminey

To be perfectly honest, i feel that this award should go to Anurag Kashyap for a new and personal take on the cliched Devdas story. But keeping in mind that this is the Filmfare awards, and since i have 3 Idiots winning the best film, i think best director will also go to Rajkumar Hirani.

Should win: Anurag Kashyap

Will win: Rajkumar Hirani

Best Actor In A Leading Role – Male

Aamir Khan – 3 Idiots
Amitabh Bachchan – Paa
Ranbir Kapoor – Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
Ranbir Kapoor – Wake Up Sid
Saif Ali Khan – Love Aaj Kal
Shahid Kapoor – Kaminey

This is where Amitabh Bachchan will add to his collection of awards. But, i feel that this should go to Shahid Kapoor for his amazing performance in Kaminey, there were points in the movie were i truly believed that there are 2 Shahid Kapoors. He has given both Guddu and Charlie distinct personalities with their own quirks et al. In fact the last time i saw this strong a performance where the actor gets lost in the character was Heath Ledger as the Joker. But as i already said, this being Filmfare, it will go to Amitabh Bachchan. Shahid will probably get the critics award to keep himself happy.

Should win: Shahid Kapoor

Will win: Amitabh Bachchan

Best Actor In A Leading Role – Female

Deepika Padukone – Love Aaj Kal
Katrina Kaif – New York
Kareena Kapoor – 3 Idiots
Kareena Kapoor – Kurbaan
Priyanka Chopra – Kaminey
Vidya Balan – Paa

Ok, this is one category in which i feel that there is no competition at all. Priyanka Chopra had too short a role to win this as did Kareena in 3 idiots. The less said about Kurbaan the better. And if Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif did any acting to be nominated, i must have missed it. So that just leaves Vidya Balan’s best performance to date for the victory.

Should and will win: Vidya Balan

Best Actor In A Supporting Role – Male

Amol Gupte – Kaminey
Boman Irani – 3 Idiots
Neil Nitin Mukesh – New York
R Madhavan – 3 Idiots
Rishi Kapoor – Luck By Chance
Sharman Joshi – 3 Idiots

One thing i commend Filmfare for is getting rid of the “Best comedian” and “Best villain” categories. Else, Amol Gupte, Boman Irani and Rishi Kapoor would be in those categories. This is a very, very strong category. But in the end, i think that Rishi Kapoor who was the best part of a really good movie in Luck by Chance will win this. He was just amazing in that role and will truly deserve this award.

Should and will win: Rishi Kapoor

Best Actor In A Supporting Role – Female

Arundhati Naag – Paa
Divya Dutta – Delhi-6
Dimple Kapadia – Luck By Chance
Kalki Koechlin – Dev D
Shahana Goswami – Firaaq
Supriya Pathak – Wake Up Sid

I cannot actually comment on this category since i haven’t seen Firaaq, and Shahana Goswami had a very strong performance in “Rock On!” last year and there is no reason to believe that she was not just as good this year too. So, I am making no prediction in this category. But, among the other nomineed, Dimple Kapadia was too good as the domineering star mother.

Best Music

A R Rahman – Delhi-6
Amit Trivedi – Dev D
Pritam Chakraborty – Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
Pritam Chakraborty – Love Aaj Kal
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy – Wake Up Sid
Vishal Bharadwaj – Kaminey

In a perfect world, i would have not had to think twice about giving this to Amit Trivedi for his mindblowing soundtrack to Dev D. It was a true delight to hear and is probably the soundtrack of the year. There is also Vishal Bharadwaj and the song of the year “Dhan te nan”. But, the only things stopping me from making that prediction are

  • A.R.Rahman has never lost when he has been nominated
  • A.R.Rahman just won 2 Grammies
  • The jury loves A.R.R.
  • The music of Delhi-6 was not all that bad (Rehna Tu.. is a brilliant song)

So, going against all good sense and taste of music that i have, these are my predictions:

Should win: Amit Trivedi

Will win: A.R.Rahman

Best Lyrics

Gulzar – Kaminey – (Kaminey)
Gulzar – Dhan Te Nan – (Kaminey)
Irshad Kamil – Aaj Din Candya – (Love Aaj Kal)
Javed Akhtar – Iktara – (Wake Up Sid)
Prasoon Joshi – Masakali – (Delhi-6)
Prasoon Joshi – Rehna Tu – (Delhi-6)

Gulzar will split his vote. The Delhi-6 songs will split theirs, and I think that the songs overpower the lyrics in Love Aaj Kal. With that in mind, my picks here are

Should and will win: Javed Akhtar – Iktara

Best Playback Singer – Male

Atif Aslam – Tu Jaane Na – (Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani)
Javed Ali-Kailash Kher – Arziyan – (Delhi-6)
Mohit Chauhan – Masakali – (Delhi-6)
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – Aaj Din Chadheya – (Love Aaj Kal)
Sonu Niigaan-Salim Merchant – Shukran Allah – (Kurbaan)
Sukhwinder Singh-Vishal Dadlani – Dhan Te Nan – (Kaminey)

This category is the one in which i think we will see Highway robbery happen, plain and simple.

There is only one deserving winner, that being “Dhan te nan”, but since it is too high tempo a song, it will be neglected in voting. And the winner will be Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for his soothing voice.

Should win: Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani

Will win (and it will be a travesty): Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. C’mon Filmfare, prove me wrong here.

Best Playback Singer – Female

Alisha Chinoy – Tera Hone Laga – (Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani)
Kavita Seth – Iktara – (Wake Up Sid)
Rekha Bhardwaj – Genda Phool – (Delhi-6)
Shilpa Rao – Mudi Mudi – (Paa)
Shreya Ghoshal – Zoobi Doobi – (3 Idiots)
Sunidhi Chauhan – Chor Bazaari – (Love Aaj Kal)

Simple one to end it with.

Should and will win: Kavita Seth – Iktara. Probably the best vocal performance this year.

Quick Picks:

  • Look for “Omi Vaidya” to get the Most promising talent or a similar award
  • Same with “Gulaal” which was a good movie but not mainstream enough
  • Look for awkward camera cuts to Kareena when Saif performs and vice versa
  • If Viveik Oberoi performs, look for a cut to Aishwarya despite them having separated over 5 years ago.

So those are my picks, which are yours? Lets see how i did in 2 weeks time when the awards are presented.

Until next time,

  1. Fair enough; really a nice analysis of filmfare… btw, a.r.rahman has once lost to anu malik (swades v/s main hoon na) though it’s less likely to happen (as correctly said by you)…. By the way, the highlight is ‘Best Director’ award and all the nominees have performed well in their own style… and the biggest disappointment is ‘Best Actress” category; no great nomination to boast about- the year was really sad for actresses!

    • True, actresses get very ill-defined roles in Hindi movies. In fact, in a few movies actresses are only present so that the hero can have someone to sing songs with.

  2. This required decent prepration, i mean jsut how vella are you?
