Filmfare awards 2011 – My picks

Welcome to the 5th annual predictions of the Filmfare awards by me. Over the past 2 years, i felt that Filmfare was taking many small steps forward in actually recognizing the best movies and performances every year in the nominations. This year, Filmfare took one giant leap backward. Every single category made me go “What were they thinking?”. Let’s just get this over with:

(Nomination list courtesy: Bollywood Hungama)

Best Film
Band Baaja Baaraat
Dabangg
My Name Is Khan
Peepli Live
Udaan

While i don’t agree that these were the best 5 films made in India in 2010, i can definitely see the logic behind these. I had 3 of these in my top 5 list for 2010. Dabangg was a certainty to be nominated so i won’t dwell on it too much. But MNIK?? Seriously? Unlike many many others, i did not hate the movie. But i can say without doubt that it is not among the best 5 movies of last year. What about “Ishqiya” or “Phas Gaya Re Obama”, too low budget and no push behind them i guess. Anyway, my prediction is that “Peepli Live” will probably take home the award. Udaan is the deserving winner but it will probably have to be content with the critics award.

Should win: Udaan.   Will win: Peepli Live

Best Director
Abhinav Kashyap (Dabangg)
Karan Johar (My Name Is Khan)
Manish Sharma (Band Baaja Baaraat )
Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Guzarish)
Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali? Are you freaking kidding me? I could not take more than 15 minutes of Guzaarish (and yes, i know it has its defenders who say that Guzaarish will be considered a piece of work in the future instead of the piece of **** it is considered now) But there is no way SLB should be nominated. What happened to Anusha Rizvi from Peepli Live? Did the movie just direct itself? This is a tough category to predict due to Anusha Rizvi’s absence. (If she had been nominated and won, she would have been the first female director since Sai Paranjpe and the first female director since the awards went “mainstream” to win. Would Peepli Live have got a nomination if it had a male director? Something to think about)

In the end, i think (and hope that i am wrong) that Filmfare will award this to Abhinav Kashyap for giving us the most entertaining movie of the year.

Should win: Vikramaditya Motwane       Will Win: Abhinav Kashyap

Best Actor In A Leading Role (Male)
Ajay Devgn (Once Upon A Time In Mumbai)
Hrithik Roshan (Guzaarish)
Salman Khan(Dabangg)
Shah Rukh Khan (My Name Is Khan)
Ranbir Kapoor (Raajneeti)

I am not going to criticize SRK’s nomination since i feel it is a deserved one. I saw MNIK in the theatre and not once did i feel that it was SRK on screen, so for completely disappearing into character, he deserves the nomination. This year there can only be one winner, the man who single handedly carried the movie to blockbuster status.

Should and will win: Salman Khan

Best Actor In A Leading Role (Female)
Aishwariya Rai Bachchan (Guzaarish)
Anushka Sharma (Band Baaja Baaraat )
Kajol (My Name Is Khan)
Kareena Kapoor (Golmaal 3)
Vidya Balan (Ishqiya)

Much better field this year than last year in terms of actresses nominated. But once again, i feel that Vidya Balan was just too good as the dangerous seductress in Ishqiya and will take the award home

Should and will win: Vidya Balan

Best Actor In Supporting Role – Male
Arjun Rampal (Raajneeti)
Arshad Warsi (Ishqiya)
Emraan Hashmi (Once Upon A Time In Mumbai)
Manoj Bajpai (Raajneeti)
Nana Patekar (Raajneeti)
Ronit Roy (Udaan)

Did Filmfare look at Peepli Live as an ensemble piece with no clear actors by any chance? Because Raghubir Yadav’s scene stealing performance being completely overlooked is unexplainable. Ronit Roy acted well, but will probably not win. The Raajneeti nominees did not have enough screen time to win.

This comes down to Arshad Warsi and Emraan Hashmi in what is the best race for this trophy in the past 5 years. Both are equally deserving, both have given brilliant performances and stole the show in their movies. In the end, i have to give it to Emraan Hashmi because his performance was the standout in the movie where as Arshad Warsi was overshadowed by Vidya Balan and Naseerudin shah (if you have to be overshadowed, those two are not a bad choice)

Should and will win: Emraan Hashmi

Best Actor In A Supporting Role – Female
Amrita Puri (Aisha)
Kareena Kapoor (We Are Family)
Prachi Desai (Once Upon A Time In Mumbai)
Ratna Patak Shah (Golmaal 3)
Supriya Pathak Kapoor (Khichdi, The Movie)

Once again, the lack of the saas-bahu duo and the female reporter from Peepli Live is shocking, and how the hell did Kareena Kapoor get nominated for her completely over the top acting in a completely over the top movie. A few deserving nominees, according to me, would have been Priyamani who was brilliant in the 15 minute role she had in Raavan, Zarina Wahab who was likewise in MNIK. Since i haven’t seen Khichdi, the movie, i will not predict this category. But of the remaining nominees, i like Prachi Desai (both generally and to win)

Best Music
Pritam Chakraborty (Once Upon A Time In Mumbai)
Sajid – Wajid & Lalit Pandit (Dabangg)
Shankar Ehsaan Loy (My Name Is Khan)
Vishal – Shekhar (Anjaana Anjaani)
Vishal – Shekhar (I Hate Luv Storys)
Vishal Bhardwaj (Ishqiya)

Why is the best music album released in 2010, i.e. Udaan, not even nominated? Amit Trivedi’s soundtrack for Udaan was class. It should have not just been nominated, but should have won this year. As it stands, i am  going to go with Dabangg, it will win on the strength of a single song “Munni Badnaam Hui”

Should have been nominated and won: Amit Trivedi

In the nominees, should win: Vishal Bhardwaj

Will win: Sajid Wajid and Lalit

Best Lyrics
Faiz Anwar – Tere Mast Mast (Dabangg)
Gulzar – Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (Ishqiya)
Niranjan Iyenger – Sajda (My Name Is Khan)
Niranjan Iyenger – Noor e Khuda (My Name Is Khan)
Vishal Dadlani – Bin Tere (I Hate Luv Storys)

If there is justice, this category will not even be close. Gulzar has written an absolute beauty, the lyrics perfectly capture the mood of the song and are just too good.

Should and will win: Gulzar

Best Playback Singer – Male
Adnan Sami, Shankar Mahadevan – Noor e Khuda (My Name Is Khan)
Mohit Chauhan – Pee Loon (Once Upon A Time In Mumbai)
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – Sajda (My Name Is Khan)
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (Ishqiya)
Shafqat Amanat Ali – Bin Tere (I Hate Luv Storys)

Finally, a category i can’t disagree too much with. All of these are deserving nominees and any one of them would be a good winner. As per me it should come down to a toss up between Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for Dil toh baccha hai jee and Mohit Chauhan for Pee Loon.

I think Rahat will split his votes between the 2 songs (is that even how Filmfare works or do they count all votes for a person towards the award?) and the award will go to Mohit Chauhan.

Should and will win: Mohit Chauhan

Best Playback Singer – Female
Mamta Sharma – Munni Badnaam Hui (Dabangg)
Shreya Ghoshal – Bahara (I Hate Luv Storys)
Shreya Ghoshal – Noor e Khuda (My Name Is Khan)
Sunidhi Chauhan – Sheila Ki Jawani (Tees Maar Khan)
Sunidhi Chauhan – Udi (Guzaarish)

Munni vs Sheila. This would have been a lock for Mamta Sharma till December, but Sunidhi Chauhan powerful voice should get her this one (India TV News Report following the awards: Sheila beats Munni for best singer)

Should and will win: Sunidhi Chauhan

So there we have it, another year gone by. Let’s see how i did on Monday after the winners are declared.
